Members of the Archives Department are always ready to help. Pictured left to right: Sisters Regina Shaughnessy; Sharon Sullivan; Mary Ryan, director; and Marianne Mader; (seated) Sister Marie Esther Sivertsen.

Our Archives collects, preserves and makes available Congregation records and materials which pertain to our origin, history, spirit and growth.

The primary purpose of the Archives is to serve the archival needs of the Sisters of Providence, but researchers are welcome. Our limited available staff members are not always able to conduct extensive research for users.

The Sisters of Providence are founding members of the Wabash Valley Visions and Voices project (WV3). For more information about this project, click here.

Some fun facts

Did you know that:

  • one of our sisters, Sister Victoire Eckert, brought $40,000 in gold either sewed in her petticoat or a mattress when she emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1847? It was her mother’s inheritance. Her mother was related to the Wellingtons of England. Sister Victoire entered the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 22, 1847, while Mother Theodore Guerin was still alive.
  • in 1917, Agrippina, the faithful old cat at the Academy, died?
  • St. Ann Hospital in Terre Haute was called Providence Hospital (1872-1875)?
