David Stevenson of Paris, Ill., hands off a donation to Kerry Scott for a book he selected July 31 at the Sisters of Providence Used Book Sale. Kerry and Roberta King, both Sisters of Providence staff members, volunteered to work at the event.

David Stevenson of Paris, Ill., attended the sale’s first day on July 31. He recorded his own first, too, as the number one member of the public to make a purchase.
David said it was his second time attending the sale, noting he had learned to come early to what is one of the most popular events held at Providence Center. “I have hundreds of books,” he said, glancing at the one in his hands, “but this year I found something for my sister.”
Sally Russell of Terre Haute was at the Used Book Sale for the first time Saturday. She was attending a St. Joseph University Parish RICA Catechist Team retreat at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Sally and others from the St. Joseph Catechist Team retreat saw the book sale and decided to check it out.
Sally was impressed. “It’s beautiful, it’s organized and the price is right,” she said, smiling. Books and other items at the Used Book Sale are not priced individually because each purchaser decides what to pay. Proceeds benefit Sisters of Providence ministries.
“All we ask is for a fair donation,” Debbie Victor, manager of The Gift Shop at Providence Center, said earlier. Purchases can be made via cash, check or credit card (Discover, Master Card, Discover or VISA.)
Mary Canarecci and Mary Flynn, both retreat attendees and Terre Haute residents, also found themselves Saturday enjoying the book sale. And how was the experience?
“Too much to see in too little time,” Mary Flynn said, only minutes before each needed to leave for another meeting on their day’s busy schedule.
Nancy Lawson of Indianapolis looks to see if she can find a movie to her liking July 31 at the Used Book Sale.
People coming to the Used Book Sale should have no difficulty finding a selection to their liking. Books cover topics such as spirituality, hobbies, cooking and travel. There are mysteries and best-sellers, both fiction and non-fiction, and children’s books.
Sometimes buyers have discovered older books that might now be out of print or some other unique find. Movies and music on VHS tape, DVDs, CDS and cassette tapes, in addition to a few puzzles, also attract buyers. In addition, one whole wall of the Providence Center Conference Room is lined with a multitude of cookbooks.
A real plus for book sale attendees is that the offerings aren’t simply strewn about. The items are organized via genre and signs on tables point the buyer to his or her area of interest.
“We have it set up like a library would be,” Debbie said. “To me, that enhances the experience. If it’s organized, the buyer will know exactly what’s there.”
