All are welcome.
Hospitality is a hallmark of the Sisters of Providence. We welcome thousands of visitors each year to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to visit with us, to learn about our history and enjoy our beautiful wooded grounds.
You’ll want to spend some time exploring Providence Center. Learn of the rich past and current ministries of the Sisters of Providence as you explore the Heritage Museum and a historic photographic display. Children and adults love our dioramas depicting the Congregation's foundation in Indiana, and the Life and Mission Hall, highlighting the current, vital ministries of the Sisters of Providence.
Within Providence Center, visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence. In May 1925, the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods established the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence in the United States.
Guests will enjoy the buffet lunches and dinners served daily in O’Shaughnessy Dining Room. A bountiful brunch is served each Sunday.
Visitors may elect to use our audiophones (handheld devices) for indoor and outdoor tours. Obtain the audiophones at the Providence Center reception desk.
Just footsteps away from Providence Center you will find:
- the 110-year-old Church of the Immaculate Conception, which is the the conventual church of the Sisters of Providence;
- the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, a place of devotion to the Eucharist;
- and the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, the Congregation's foundress, who was only the eighth U.S. resident to be canonized.
Outdoor areas of interest include:
- the tiny, charming, 125-year-old St. Anne Shell Chapel, decorated completely with shells from the Wabash River in Vigo County;
- the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, a replica of the larger shrine in France;
- a beautiful outdoor Way of the Cross;
- a labyrinth set in a peaceful wooded area; and
- other shrines and grottos.
Nearly 100 varieties of trees and an abundance of birds and wildlife can be seen on the grounds. For a more complete overview of the grounds, visit our online tour.
