As Alice Liu begins her second year as a Providence Volunteer Minister she goes from one culture to another.

Alice will be revisiting her roots as she volunteers in campus ministry at Providence University in Taiwan after spending her first year at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., giving service in the Sisters of Providence Central Business Office, Archives, Health Care Services, and Woods Day Care/Pre-School.

“I surprised myself that I have so many different skills,” she said about her first year. “I have enjoyed the peace and quiet here for the last 12 months. Going to Providence University with 12,000 students will be a whole different world.”

The school is a Catholic co-educational institution in Shalu, Taichung County, Taiwan. It was founded by the Sisters of Providence.

“I’m looking forward to working with the sisters in Taiwan and learning more about the ministries there,” she said.

“That’s where I was born, so it’s nice to get in touch with that part of my heritage and get to see family and friends. And the food!”

She talked about why she wanted to extend her volunteer work past one year.

“This has been such a positive personal growth experience that I definitely wanted to give back for the second year,” she said. “I’m learning how to serve God in all different ways.”

Alice has a master’s degree in professional accounting, a bachelor of liberal arts in economics and a bachelor of business administration degree, all from the University of Texas in Austin. She speaks Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese, a little Cantonese dialect and English.

Her hobbies and interests are singing in the church choir, vegetable and rose gardening, Chinese and Mexican food, playing piano, watching inspirational movies, traveling, connecting with family, reading English and Chinese versions of the Bible, and photography.
