A woman can discern about pursuing religious life as long as needed. When she is ready to take the next step — enter into formal discernment and learn firsthand about life as a Sister of Providence — she applies for entrance to the Congregation. Upon mutual acceptance of the application, a guided process known as initial formation begins. The stages of initial formation are:
