What is Programs to Go?

These programs are designed to come to your school, scout meeting or home-schooling group to bring a little of White Violet Center to your classroom.

All programs adhere to educational standards and implement the same experiential learning techniques the on-farm programs at White Violet Center already provide. We continue to offer these field trip opportunities but now when you can’t come to WVC we can come to you!

Program descriptions

All programs are suitable for ages 6 and up and are adapted to each grade level.

While all programs are good for any age, some programs are particularly well-suited for specific age ranges which are noted below.

Wiggling Worms at Work

Learn how valuable worms are to soil and gardens. Children can see some of WVC’s red wiggler worms in our portable worm composting system and learn how these critters turn garbage into gold. Participants also learn differences among different worm species and how they move. This program is well-suited for lower elementary grades.

Art of the Alpaca

Our beloved alpacas do a lot more than stand there looking cute – they provide valuable fleece used for a variety of fiber arts. Participants learn about alpaca fiber, what makes it unique and how it compares to other animal and plant fibers. Students can also try their hand at such fiber arts as water felting, needle felting, drop spinning, and weaving. Projects will vary according to age and skill levels. This is a great program for art classes.

Habitat, Sweet Habitat

This program is based on the habitat programs offered at WVC, but with an urban twist. Participants learn about the importance of habitat, how to identify different types and what kind of wildlife is to be expected in each habitat. Students finish the program by becoming habitat explorers themselves. Instead of using the grounds at WVC, we will explore the schoolyard for signs of life. This is a great way to teach students that habitat is everywhere, not just in "wilderness" areas.

Follow the River

What happens to a drop of water in the Wabash River in Terre Haute? Where does it go? In this program, students become water molecules to learn water cycle basics. On this journey, students learn about the wideranging effects of pollution and see how water connects all living things. This program is best suited for upper elementary and middle school.

Green Power

With a little imagination, students can become "eco-detectives" and learn simple things they can do every day to keep Earth a little cleaner and healthier. By using the classroom as an example, this program is designed to help give participants a better awareness of eco-justice issues such as energy use, air and water pollution, natural resources and waste management (landfills, recycling, etc.).
