In 1998, White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, accepted a donation of their first six alpacas. Since then, the award winning herd has grown to 63 alpacas raised for sales, breeding and fiber production.
Valuable fiber
The fiber program has grown from frequent small group gatherings of learning how to spin, weave, felt and knit to having fiber working sessions every Tuesday evening and providing both simple and intensive fiber workshops for learning and improving skills.
Handmade alpaca garments
The garments made by Sisters of Providence, volunteers and friends are sold at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice and in The Gift Shop at Providence Center at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. The proceeds from the alpaca items help pay for food and routine vet care for the alpacas.
