White Violet Center for Eco-Justice (WVC) is a ministry of the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. Founded in 1996, WVC exists to foster a way of life that recognizes the interdependence of all of creation. We do this through a number of programs including earth spirituality, environmental education, and sustainable agriculture.

At WVC you’ll find 320 acres of forestland, 343 acres of certified organic cropland, a 5 acre organic garden, two orchards, a restored greenhouse, and a small apiary from which we harvest and sell small amounts of raw, unfiltered honey. Another important part of our sustainable agriculture program is our alpaca herd. We have about 60 alpacas. We mix their manure with leaves and kitchen scraps and use it to enrich the soil in the garden.

Qualifications

The internship position is intended for individuals who wish to have a combination of field work and academic study. While much of the intern's time is spent working in the field, a portion of each week is reserved for study in the intern's area of specialized interest. The intern will also complete a project in his/her chosen area, so applicants should have a strong desire to learn.

Applicants must be physically fit, capable of completing the rigors of garden work and able to work in a variety of weather conditions. Previous farm experience is preferred, but not necessary to apply. Mostly, we encourage an interest in sustainable farming, a willingness to learn and ability to self-direct.

Duration is negotiable. There is a minimum commitment of three months with options up to seven months – April through October

Stipend/salary/benefits

Compensation includes a private room, farm produce, paid lunch on workdays (Monday-Friday), and access to WVC workshops. There are also opportunities to learn fiber arts such as felting, knitting and spinning.
