1. Snip the plastic rings that hold six-packs of soda together. We don’t want them to get into a lake or ocean and have birds or fish get their noses caught in them.
2. Volunteer at a local farm or farmer’s market.
3. Don’t litter. Deer and other animals can get their tongues cut on opened cans. Put trash in trash cans instead of throwing it on the ground or out the car window. You may think throwing an apple core or banana peel out a car window is ok, but if an animal smelling food finds this it could get hit by traffic.
4. Be a good example for your parents. If you start recycling at home they will see that it really means something to you and will help.
5. Take a bag with you when you go shopping, so you don’t have to take a plastic or paper bag at the store. If you only buy one or two things say no if the clerk asks you if you want a bag. It’s better to save a tree.
6. Don’t buy Styrofoam. It takes about 100 years for a Styrofoam cup to decompose in the landfill. Try not to buy them because they are difficult to dispose of.
7. Use both sides of a piece of paper. It might be the paper you are drawing or writing on or using in the computer printer.
8. Planting trees and plants in your backyard is a good way to protect animals by giving them food and shelter.
9. Recycle paper, cans, newspapers, glass and plastic. It’s not always about the money. It’s cool that the things we use today can be made into other things we’ll use in the future.
10. Turn off your MP3 player or Walkman when you’re not using it.
11. Use a solar calculator instead of one that uses batteries.
12. Read books about the rainforest from the library.
