Is everyone you know the same? No, of course not. Having friends from different backgrounds — people who look, talk, dress, eat and act differently — makes life more interesting. This mix of all kinds of people, thoughts, and ways of looking at the world is called diversity.
However, not everyone would agree that having diversity is better. Influenced by a lack of information or misunderstandings, these people are often afraid of people who are different. When people think or do bad things to a group of people for no reason or out of ignorance, this is called prejudice.
Prejudice is often used to describe thinking bad things about a person who is different. People may have prejudice against others for many reasons, including:
- the color of someone’s skin;
- the country or region where a person is from;
- a person’s religion;
- the way a person talks;
- a disability or illness a person may have;
- the way a person acts or thinks; and/or
- the money a person has or doesn’t have.
Do you think these are very good reasons to hate another person? Is there any good reason to hate another person?
